It’s What You DON’T DO - Chapter 3

My first legit, legal job was at a place called Fiesta Restaurant.  A little taco stand in town where I started off filling salsas and making drinks, and mopping floors.  I had a great time working with my friend, Randy Martinez, where I was introduced to QUEEN’s music.  Literally, that’s all we listened to the entire Summer.  Randy was a cool Senior… I was an awkward 14 ½ years old Freshman, and it was awesome.

I learned a great lesson from my boss there that I have carried through to this day.  One day I was mopping the floors and he came to check the place out before we locked up.  He looked around and said:

Him: Hannah.. what is this?  And look you missed a spot there… and the napkins aren’t filled there…

Me: But I just mopped, and did this… and did that… and did this….

And he said to me something that I will never forget.  He said..

Him: It’s not what I don’t see. It’s what I DO see.

Who would have thought that such a simple concept would resonate for my entire life?  I could work, and work, and work…. But if I missed something, got lazy, or just thought I could take a short cut…. That would be the thing that stuck out.  That would be the thing that would make the Supervisor feel that I did nothing.

I never made that mistake again.

So, after that life lesson, and after I got locked in the walk-in refrigerator with Hugo (who decided he was going to grope and kiss me)… it was time for me to move on.  #metoo
